I threw this planter on my potters wheel, after forming the pot I added each spike, one at a time to the exterior surface of the pot and a fins to the body and 3 holes for hanging the pot.
After the first firing I glazed the entire pot with several different glazes to get the color shown, it was then refired. I used a brown cotton cord to hang this planter.

Hole is 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches
